The Black Pearl

ok, I know I said in my journal I would probably be quiet on DA for a while, but I also promised to post photos of the painting I did on black velvet! so ya, same as the bunnies in my previous post, this was painted in celebration of 30 years of art at the gallery I work for. (and just like the bunnies were hard to sew, it was hard to paint on velvet, too!!)

The theme was black velvet & pearls. I struggled for a while trying to think of a subject to paint until I re-watched Pirates of the Caribbean and had the sudden thought that I NEEDED to paint the Black Pearl! So, I took aused the movie and took pictures of the TV screen with my digital camera... which doesn't work out all that well lol but it was enough.

All of the black parts of this painting were masked off with masking tape while the blue was painted. In oil paints, btw. The masking tape was removed in layers and the black softened a bit. The details on the ship were painted with a fine brush in black paint, or I scraped the blue paint away with the point of a bamboo skewer. We has this junky, tacky gold frame at work that I thought was perfectly pirate booty-ish!

The guy who won this was very pleased and told me it's hanging on his wall with the rest of his art collection. Which is a BIG compliment, cause he's apparently quite the art collector! So, I'm happy it went to someone who could appreciate it :3
